Net gain for short film -Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum - The HINDU Review

Shivaji Dev and Shilpa Bhatt in Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum, AVM Productions first ‘internet only’ Tamil short-feature.

AVM Productions’ Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum is the first studio-backed short film made exclusively for the Internet. A review

Recognising the huge demand for movie content on the Internet, AVM Productions has produced its first ‘internet only’ Tamil short-feature, Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum, which was uploaded on Tamil New Year’s day on the video sharing site, YouTube.

While the attempt to produce an ‘Internet only’ film itself can be construed as ambitious, Idhuvum's content is yet another improvisation of themes that we have often encountered in several popular short films: first love, break up and coping with heart break.

As the title suggests, Idhuvum Kadandhu Pogum, too, is a film about losing a loved one and moving on. The film opens with Gautham (Shivaji Dev), a young man presumably in his late 20s, falls asleep while having a late night conversation with his fiancée and long-time girlfriend, Janani. Next morning, he finds out that she has met with an accident and succumbed to her injuries.

For a film that begins with a tragedy, it is an optimistic tale of finding love again. It marks a comeback of sorts for Sivaji Ganesan’s grandson, Shivaji Dev (Ramkumar’s son), who delivers a dignified performance that could so easily have gone south had he been oddly dramatic. The stint at the film school seems to have done a world of good for him.

The directors, Anil Krishnan and Srihari Prabhaharan, demonstrate a good understanding of short film's grammar: there are no shots of large expansive landscapes. They have mostly kept it tight knowing well that the film would mostly be seen in smaller screens or even mobile phones. A doting father and a grieving son is not an entirely new concept — we have seen it earlier in Gautham Menon’s Varanam Aayiram. But what works for the film is that it is as much the story of Gautham’s father (Ravi Raghavendar) who is there when he needs it the most as it is Gautham’s who eventually finds his feet. The fact that it has been made without a compromise and has a heart of its own is a bonus.

Cuckoo Tamil Movie Review by Common Man

Trailer & songs of the Movie created huge expectation as it looked completely different from usual movies. Dinesh proved that he is one of the talented actors in Tamil Cinema with “Attakathi” . Trailer showed the glimpses of his wonderful performance in the movie. Director Raja Murugan has worked as writer of “Ananda Vikatan” and has good fan following for his writing skills. “Vattiyum Mudhalum”, a weekly series, written by him was very popular. He also has worked as Assistant Director for Linguswamy (Bheema & Paiyaa). Movie is produced by Fox Star Studios which gave two wonderful movies to Tamil Cinema – Engeyum Eppothum & Raja Rani. Let us see whether this movie will satisfy the Common Man in this review
Story: A realistic blind people love story without any cinematic compromise. Director had to be hugely appreciated for taking a movie, which is not explored much in Tamil Cinema and for not including any commercial scenes and spoiling the plot of the movie.
Dinesh – He just appears in the screen for 3 – 4 minutes in the movie “Pannaiyarum Padminiyum” and the scene receive awesome response from the audience, as his body language in the scene was fantabulous. This movie will be one of the best movies in his career. He may be called as “Cuckoo” Dinesh, instead of “Attakathi” Dinesh from now on. He has lived the role of a blind guy and has got several scenes to give wonderful performance in this movie.
Malavika Nair – She is one of the luckiest heroines in India Cinema to make debut with such a wonderful role. Most of the girls will not agree to make debut in Tamil Cinema with this kind of characterization. She has boldly accepted the offer and has done complete justice to the role.
Aadukalam Murugadoss – He plays the role of Dinesh’s friend and have done wonderful job.
Ilango and Nandhini, who have acted as lead pair friends are really visually challenged people and they have lived their role. Especially, Ilango has done the role with ease and receives applause from the audience in various scenes for his acting and voice modulation.
Chandrababu, Vijay, Ajith, M.G.R roles have been imitated in the movie with various people. They have acted very well; especially the person who plays Chandrababu’s (Eswar) role has given flawless performance.
Music by Santhosh Narayanan has been already well received by the audience. His BGM along with Ilaiyaraaja songs (it has been used in various important scenes) will be treating to the audience. But, there is also a scene or two, in which it would have been better if it was left silent.
Cinematography by P. K. Varma was awesome. He has portrayed on how blind people sees the world convincingly.
Editing by Shanmugam Velusamy was good. First half & Second half of the movie run for 80 minutes each. Most of the recently released movies run for just 100 minutes. Duration of the movie is a huge let down as it looks dragging in both the halves.
Raju Murugan had made a wonderful debut in Tamil Cinema. It is definitely a new experience to Tamil Audience. People who want to watch a movie, which has lots of feelings and emotions, will like it. Dialogues n the movie were bold and realistic. There were lots of political related dialogues, which may go well with the current trend. Duration of the movie and dragging scenes, which looks repetitive & dragging climax plays the spoilsport. It is definitely one of the movies which will be praised by the Critics and people who love good cinema. It is definitely not for the commercial movie lovers who expect lots of actions scenes, fast screenplay & comedy scenes, which are not related with the movie.
Rating of this movie by Common Man – 2.75 / 5
Rating of this movie for realistic movie lovers, Korean movie lovers, people who love good cinema, people who liked Kadhal movie, etc – 3.5 / 5

VEERAM - Common Man Review

VEERAM MOVIE | COMMON MAN REVIEW

Veeram – Trailer of the movie had scenes with lots of punch dialogues and action scenes, which is much more than enough for Ajith fans to watch the movie at least twice on the first day.

Ajith is acting in rural based movie after long time.Brother SentimentCommercial Action movies are very common in Tamil Cinema in 90’S. But, Ajith is doing this kind of role for the first time and hence, it has created good expectation among his fans. This is second movie for director Siruthai Siva. Let us see whether he manages to give a movie which will satisfy Ajith Fans & Common Man in this review.

Story: First Half – How love blossoms between Ajith and Tamanna? Second Half – How Ajith safeguards Tamanna’s family?

Ajith – Ajith's intro was simple, but will be loved by his fans. Intro Song was better than Arrambam as it was well choreographed. Recent Ajith movies didn't give him much opportunity to perform in various scenes & were one dimensional. In this movie, Ajith gets Mass Scenes, utter best Punch dialogues & most importantly, perform in romance & sentiment oriented scenes after long time.
Ajith had to be appreciated for selecting this script which gives more screen for Santhanam & the rest in the first half.

Tamanna – She makes a comeback to Tamil Cinema after Venghai Usually, in big heroes movies, Heroine will be used as Glamour doll, dancing for 2 duet songs and have 3- 4 scenes going behind the hero. The whole movie revolves around her character and she completely fits the role

Santhanam – The only person who can tease Ajith and can receive applause from Ajith fans. He has more screen presence in the first half, with his best comedy timing dialogues.

Vidaarth, Bala, Munish, Sohail have done the role of Ajith’s brothers. Thambi Ramaiah, Nassar, Pradeep Rawat, Abhinaya, Suza Kumar, Vidyulekha etc have done the supporting actors role to perfection.

Cinematographer Vetri – Interval Block fight scene had been captured brilliantly. “Ival Dhaana” Song picturization was superb

Editor Kasi Viswanathan had to be highly appreciated for the engaging screenplay. Though, the story is pretty old one, the pace of the screenplay was quite good.

Music by Devi Sri Prasad – Though, the songs were pretty average, he has made sure that BGM gives more value to screen presence of Ajith in various scenes. There are 2 duet songs in the movie, it would be better if one is removed.

Director Siruthai Siva has given yet another Commercial Sentiment Action Movie to Tamil Cinema, but manages to make it a hit by mixing the right ingredients - Comedy, Romance, Sentiment, Action, Mass Scenes and Punch Dialogues. He will be called as ‘Veeram’ Siva from now on. There is lit bit of Telugu flavour in the movie without any doubt.

Overall, this movie will be a big treat for AJITH fans. It will also satisfy Family audience as it has lots of comedy, romance & sentiment oriented scenes

Rating of this movie by Common Man – 3.5 / 5
Rating of this movie for Ajith Movie Lovers - 4 / 5
